Jessop & Company Limited
- Jessop & Co. Limited (JCL) a company; registered office at 21 & 22, Jessore Road, Kolkata 700 028 and its two units at Dumdum and Durgapur in West Bengal, was engaged in manufacturing, production and distribution of railway wagons, dockside, port cranes, EMU coaches, Radial, vertical, caisson cranes etc. JCL was wholly taken over by the GoI in 1973. Later on in 1986 JCL became the subsidiary of Bharat Bhari Udyog Nigam Limited(BBUNL) (the holding company).
- Jessop was declared sick and referred to BIFR for revival in May 1998.
- The Government of West Bengal extended support by way of sanction of a soft loan of Rs.30.66 crore to liquidate its arrear sales tax in January 1999.
- The Government of India divested 74% stake in the company in favour of Ruia Group in 2003. Subsequently the holding of BBUNL fell to 4.16% due to infusion of capital by JCL only.
- A team from West Bengal Legislative Assembly visited the Dum Dum factory on 01.03.2012 on the basis of the representation received from the employees of the factory.
- To ensure the continuation of the production and distribution of its products are essential to the needs of the nation the Jessop India Limited (Acquisition and Transfer of Undertaking) Bill, 2016 was passed on 27th Feb 2016 in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. The Governor of West Bengal forwarded the Bill to the Ministry of Home Affairs, GOI for assent of the President of India in March, 2016.
- Subsequently, the Ministry of Home Affairs solicited views of the Government of West Bengal on the matters raised by different Ministries / Departments of GOI.
- The replies were sent to the MHA, GOI from time to time.
