Durgapur Chemicals Limited is a Government owned Chemical manufacturing industry which has been serving the state and the nation since 1968. It was incorporated on 31st July 1963 by the Honorable Chief Minister Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. Primarily, Durgapur Chemicals Limited was established to serve as an integral part of The Durgapur Projects Limited (Established on 6th September, 1961) to utilize its power, water, Benzene, Naphthalene, Coke Oven Gas etc. DCL started commercial production of Phenol, Phthalic Anhydride, Monochloro Benzene, Sodium Penta Chloro Phenol, Caustic Soda Lye, Chlorine and Hydrochloric Acid from 1968. Unfortunately, due to technological problems of Phenol Plant, DCL stopped the production of Phenol in the year 1983. The Phthalic Anhydride Plant also became technologically obsolescent over the time as xylene replaced naphthalene as feed for production through the development of process technology. The naphthalene-based operations of the phthalic an hydride plant were discontinued in 1989.
The company continued its operation with the production of Caustic Soda Plant (30TPD), MCB (30TPD), Mixed DCB (5TPD) and Sodium Pentachloro Phenate and other by products like HCl. The company also setup new value-added products like Stable Bleaching Powder Plant (9000TPA) and Hydrogen Bottling unit in the year 1999.
Due to old technological (Mercury Cell Technology) and environmental challenges, Govt. of West Bengal set up a high-level committee on Public Sector Restructuring to study the problems and prospects of each of the enterprises separately, Accordingly, the Price Water House Coopers had been appointed in December 2002 by Govt. to study the business optimization and restructuring of the Enterprises. After implementation of Administrative and Financial Restructuring in February 2004, Production of Caustic lye by mercury Cell technology had been stopped in the month of September,2008 & an Environment Friendly technology has been introduced [ION EXCHANGE MEMBRANE CELL TECHNOLOGY] for the commercial production of Caustic Soda Lye with a capacity of 100 TPD since November, 2008.
Finally, due to lack of technological up gradation and reduced market demands, Chlorine consuming plants like Monochloro Benzene, Dichloro benzene and Sodium Penta- Chlorophanate had to be suspended for operation in the year 2013 and 2017.
